Some of the most dangerous people on the road are inattentive drivers. Drivers who are not paying close attention to the road and the things happening right in front of them are often the cause of serious accidents. While, these people never intend to cause an accident they are choosing to act negligently when they put their focus on something other than the task of driving safely. When a person makes this decision he or she could be held liable for any injuries or deaths that he or she causes.
An elderly Illinois man was killed after a serious crash involving five passenger cars and two semi-trucks in a construction zone in Michigan, recently. According to police reports, at the time of the accident the construction zone had created traffic congestion. Meanwhile, authorities say one of the semi-truck drivers was not paying attention when the accident occurred. One lane was closed by the construction, which caused the flow of traffic to slow down. Authorities say that the driver of the semi-truck apparently did not notice the slow down and didn’t react appropriately to the slowed traffic. He ended up slamming into the back of the SUV that was right in front of him.
Both the SUV and the Semi-Truck then slammed into another semi-truck and four other passenger vehicles. In all, four people were taken to the hospital for serious injuries and a 72-year-old man was killed at the scene. Additionally, seven other people involved in the accident were injured and treated on site. Authorities are still investigating the incident and charges could still be forthcoming.
All 11 people who were hurt, plus the family of the man who was killed, could be eligible for compensation if the driver of the semi-truck is held responsible for the accident. Even the seven people who were treated at the scene should not overlook a possible injury claim. Sometimes injuries don’t show up right away, and other times the severity of some injuries isn’t known until after some time has passed.
