When those with sex addictions are around young children, they may develop an unhealthy attraction to these kids. This is especially true for doctors, who often perform physical exams on their young patients. This can lead to the commission of sex crimes and other criminal activity.

A Michigan sports doctor—who admits to having an addiction to sex and child porn—is facing 60 years in prison for child pornography. The federal court handed down three 20-year prison sentences to the 54-year-old man. The doctor worked at USA Gymnastics, which trains gymnasts for the Olympics. He also worked at Michigan State University.

In 2016, investigators found more than 37,000 child porn images on the man’s electronic devices. He faces 60 years of prison for this, but has filed an appeal.

Besides the pornography, the man admitted to molesting gymnasts while treating them. More than 140 females of all ages—including Olympic gymnasts—have accused him of sexual abuse. He will receive sentencing for those cases in January.

Understanding Sex Addiction

Many people enjoy sex, but there are others who have a preoccupation with it. They develop a sex addiction that consumes their thoughts to the point where they find it difficult to function. They cannot control it, so they continue to become obsessed with it, to the point where it has negative consequences.

When a sex addiction gets a person in trouble with the law, he or she then becomes a sex offender. Not every sex addict becomes a sex offender. Some are able to control their addiction to some degree or get help before it’s too late.

More than half of sex offenders in prison have been diagnosed as sex addicts. More than 70 percent of these sex addicts are child molesters. Most know the victims personally, either as a friend or family member.

Sex addiction tends to progress over time. A person does not typically start out by raping someone. It may start with masturbation or pornography and then escalate to molestation or rape. The person may continue to participate in acts that are riskier and more extreme until he or she seeks help or is arrested for a sex crime.

Treatment for sex addiction can be difficult. Not everyone responds the same way, and some fail to respond at all. Specialists must incorporate various forms of assessment and treatment into their programs. The chances of reoffending is high, and in many cases, offenders spend the rest of their lives behind bars to protect the safety of the community.
