The Davison Township Police Department reports that a victim was taken to the hospital after a bus driver allegedly failed to stop at a yield sign resulting in a collision with the victim’s car. The bus was carrying elementary school children. The children and the bus driver were not injured in the accident. Police explain that this will most likely end up being a “stop sign related, failure to yield” issue. The victim was temporarily trapped inside the vehicle and the bus driver tried to pull off after the accident but the bus would not start. The Davison Community Schools have not decided whether to take disciplinary action against the bus driver and authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

Every day Michigan residents use school, public, and private buses for transportation to and from home. This makes accidents like the one described above surprising. While it may be hard to avoid accidents, it is possible for you to take a few steps you can take to help ensure that you and your loved ones are safe when traveling on a bus.

  • Download the SafeBus App: the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration SafeBus application and the associated website contains detailed information for more than 6,000 different carriers including school, private and tour buses.
  • Only Use Reputable Companies: you may see an ad on Craigslist or another website. This does not mean that the company is reliable or legal. You should always book your travel with bus companies that are able to promptly produce a certificate that proves they are operating legally.
  • Research Your Carrier: ensure your carrier has proper insurance coverage. Michigan law requires all carrier to have liability and no-fault insurance policies. If a carrier is not listed as a licensed carrier by MDOT then it is possible the carrier does not have the proper coverage.
  • Research Bargain Basement Deals: if a bus company is offering an inexpensive deal, then the company may have other issues that they are not taking care of regarding critical compliance and safety issues. Make sure you research the company and understand their safety record.
  • Report Issues: if you experience mechanical or safety issues during a ride, then you should report these problems to the MDOT. These reports are confidential and may help avoid a future accident.
