We trust doctors to provide us with the best care possible for our health issues. Sometimes, however, they cross the line and engage in sexual activity with patients. This is not only unethical but illegal if the patient did not give consent.

A Michigan doctor is currently in jail for having sex with a vulnerable patient. During the investigation, authorities found that the man was also in possession of child pornography.

The 46-year-old doctor, formerly a pediatric rheumatologist at the University of Michigan, had his license suspended in December 2017. He had a relationship with a patient that lasted two years. She started seeing the doctor for rheumatoid arthritis when she was 17 years old. She also was diagnosed with mental illness.

The doctor, who is married with children, was arrested on February 12 at Detroit Metro Airport. The man had agreed to surrender himself several weeks earlier, but failed to. State licensing authorities alerted law enforcement to the doctor’s alleged sexual relationship with his patient.  While investigating this case, authorities seized various forms of media and found a flash drive containing sexually explicit images of minors. There were 210 images, most of them minor females exposing their genitals. Records showed that the images were created in 2008 and last accessed in May 2017.

At the moment, the man’s only crime is possession of child pornography. According to the doctor’s lawyer, no sexual misconduct has occurred because the patient was 18 years old at the time the sexual relationship started and she consented to it.

The relationship began when the patient was in the clinic seeing a different doctor. This doctor saw her and instructed her to make an appointment with him. At the first appointment, the doctor grabbed her behind and pulled it toward his erect penis.

The relationship became sexual for the next two years. The two would have sex at the patient’s apartment. The doctor was seeing her every 3-4 weeks instead of the usual three months in between appointments. They would have sex at the clinic, and while he was giving her pain medications, they weren’t the recommended medications for her medical condition. The doctor would often mention his underage female patients, whom he referred to as “hot.”

The University of Michigan was alerted of the doctor’s sexual misconduct and removed him from work that same day. He is no longer an employee there and is currently in jail.
