Any dog can bite a human if it is provoked into biting or suffering from a neurological disorder. But certain dog breeds are more likely than others to bite and kill human victims, often because of the way these breeds tend to be trained and used.
Dogsbite.org provides valuable data about dog bites in the United States and Canada. According to this website, the following four breeds were responsible for the most bites and victim deaths between 1982 and 2014. In Michigan, a dog’s owner is strictly liable for any damages the dog inflicts on a victim while lawfully on private or public property unless the victim provoked the dog into attacking. The owner does not have to be aware of any history of aggression in the dog to be liable for the damages it inflicts.
Wolf hybrids are not actually dogs. They are animals that are part wolf and part domestic dog. As such, they do not behave like domestic dogs and can be dangerous to individuals who are not experienced in working with wild animals. According to the dogsbite.org data, wolf hybrids were responsible for 85 injuries and 19 deaths, putting them at #4 on the list of the 10 dog breeds most likely to bite human victims. Michigan and many other states prohibit the ownership of wolf hybrids because of the danger they pose to their owners and others.
According to the list, huskies caused human victims to suffer 83 incidences of bodily harm and 26 deaths during the 32 years of data collected.
Rottweilers are frequently used as guard and attack dogs. As the second-most likely breed to bite a human victim, rottweilers were responsible for 535 injuries and 85 deaths between 1982 and 2014. These dogs are large and powerful, making them dangerous in the hands of inexperienced owners and those who are not willing to train and socialize them properly.
It is probably not surprising that pit bulls top the list of the most likely dog breeds to bite victims, with an injury count of 3,397 and a death count of 295 from 1982 to 2014. Pit bulls are frequently used as fighting dogs. Those rescued from dog fighting operations and even those from less violent backgrounds can still be difficult to train and socialize properly, which can make the dog dangerous to humans.
